Latest News. How I helped an elderly client overcome their fear of confined spaces, with Trevor Wales Hypnotherapy Solutions in Cornwall and Devon.

A successful treatment for claustrophobia.

Very recently I have been working with an elderly female client with a lifelong fear of confined spaces and having her head covered. My client has needed to have two hospital appointments for scans and having been inside a scanner at some previous point in time where they found it very difficult to deal with the emotional trauma of being in a confined space was feeling very fearful of having to go in for two further appointments that were very close together.

The following is a brief description of the session and the outcome. These are the notes from my diary about the main session.

A fairly lengthy and urgent appointment today as my client’s appointment is very soon.

Within three hours of what at times seemed like a very difficult challenge for my client, a breakthrough has been made and my client is no longer full of dread & fear about the affects of the childhood experiences when their fear was first established.

Client confidentiality restricts me from giving only the minimum details, but this person’s fears lay in the past in early childhood from an accident when they were playing with a friend and nearly fell down a very deep tunnel where that person may have met an untimely end but were caught just in time.

It took three different keys to find the key which fitted to unlock the door in her mind and release the fear. The first two interventions were not really fitting the client well, the client finding it difficult to find something they could work with.

The third key fitted exactly and hypno-analysis with regression to cause worked beautifully, transporting the person back through their time line some sixty years.

Using this technique I was able to guide my client back to the events and re-frame them in her mind creating a different emotional response.

Checking repeatedly several times throughout the session and post hypnosis fact gathering found my client telling me that they felt so much better around those memories and had a new understanding and feeling.

We then floated forward to the timeline of now and worked with suggestion therapy around the fear of being inside the scanner.

The next progression was to work around my client projecting into a future memory with my client looking back to that past moment when they were free of their fear and were able to say, I was able to do it and it was so easy and to identify with what emotions they have in that future state.

Since my clients hospital appointments I have had two phone calls from my client to thank me for my help which is always good to hear and to inform me how they got on. I was delighted to hear from my client that the staff at the hospital remarked how much calmer my client was than on the previous appointment. My client informing me how much easier it all was since her hypnosis session and that the second hospital scanner appointment later that week was no problem at all.

Being a therapist with a range of therapy skills brings to mind the fact that we each have a set of keys. We won’t know for certain if that key will fit that lock and unlock the jail in the clients mind, but having more than one key equips us with a variety of options to find the right one that unlocks the door for the client and helps them to access their own best inner resources and change their minds and change their lives.

The message here is that hypnosis can achieve so much, however, just as a GP doesn't always find the right course of tablets which may help your problem straight away, so it is with hypnosis.

Some clients take an approach that hypnosis is an instant cure all magic wand and if it doesn't happen in the first session with one approach, they draw the wrong conclusion and throw in the towel, whereas if they gave themselves some slack and made allowances for themselves to find what works for them then indeed that journey to self change can be started and once the right key is used the results often come more quickly than the client anticipates much to their delight.

Hypnosis does indeed have a very important role to play in our world giving people the keys to unlock doors and realise real positive change in their lives.

Hypnosis gives us the resources to tap into the power of our minds to make change at a subconscious level where change has just not been possible previously on the conscious level.

On a final note, I think another positive aspect of this story is that however old we are is that it is never too late to change something.
