How hypnotherapy can help with depression and self esteem issues. A blog about a clients journey from suicidal thoughts to wellness.

Suicide is a very difficult and taboo subject to discuss but in it is sadly more and more commonplace  in society these days and affects many people from all walks of life, both rich & poor, the well educated and the poorly educated.

There have been various preconceptions generated in the press and media about suicidal personality types over the years and some of those preconceptions were not always helpful seemingly creating stereotypes. However in recent years thankfully those perceptions have changed and most enlightened people understand that what happens to people on their life journeys can create the circumstances that lead to severe depression and suicidal thoughts.

Earlier this year I attended a short course run by ASIST which stands for applied suicide intervention skills training. This course was a very valuable course which looked at a very broad spectrum of circumstances and situations and trained attendees in how to intervene in a suicide situation to keep the person safe for now and moving forwards finding them the help they need.

Click on the BWRT logo to find out about this remarkable therapy that can help with anxiety and depression

As a therapist I work with a broad range of presenting issues but over recent years more frequently people are coming to see me presenting with #anxiety and depression. This year I have worked with three clients from various backgrounds and various parts of the country who when they came to see me and started therapy with me were suffering serious depression and were experiencing suicidal thoughts.  The backgrounds of the presenting issues were  varied, one was relating to long term marital troubles where they could see no way out ,another was surrounding isolation and family troubles and financial problems and another was a long term sense of identity relating to childhood abandonment issues and abusive relationships.

This morning I received an email from a client who I began working with back in July. This person comes from a professional management business background and has gone through some dramatic life changes.  When this person came to see me they had already been suffering from a long term issue of loneliness, low self esteem and self worth and an identity crisis. This persons circumstances had led them to contemplate suicide and to make matters worse their GP they felt was completely unhelpful. That is when they turned to me. The journey in therapy was not always an easy one but slowly and steadily good progress was made and month by month both client and I have been able to see good improvements  using the therapeutic  evaluation tools that I use such as the ‘wheel of life’ analysis tool along with patient health questionnaire and general anxiety disorder scales.  The advantage of these tools is that it gives both client and patient an overview of how things are changing. The most important thing of course is listening to the client and taking on board how they feel and using somatic questioning to determine the quality , validity and depth of those answers which helps the client to really connect with themselves and understand themselves and judge whether those answers or how they feel reflects their own inner truth. The email this morning talks of feeling self empowered, feeling calmer and having a strong sense of self belief where they can step away from therapy and go forward into the world on their terms with confidence looking to lead and not follow and to believe in themselves once again.

To receive an email like this is very good leaving me with a very good feeling to have been instrumental through the use of applied solution focussed hypnotherapy to  able to help this person upon their life journey in making significant change and is further testimony to the power of good therapy and in particular hypnotherapy to help create positive inner change, all of this without the intervention of  anti depressants or drug therapy of any kind.

Hypnotherapy is capable of creating real lasting change in all areas of life not just anxiety and depression.

For more information on hypnotherapy why not visit my treatment page or give a call for an informal chat to see how you may benefit from hypnotherapy in an area of your life whether its coping with a fear of flying or quitting smoking or improving performance

Sailing the stormy waters of life. Are you prepared mentally, physically and spiritually?

Ask any sailor about the importance of preparation before a voyage and making good on the course they are sailing and they will tell you their wisdom and why it is so important.

When sailing for a destination one has to prepare both mentally and physically. A sailor will have assessed the weather and tide conditions and consulted charts for tides and obstacles. A decent sailor will have checked the preparedness of his vessel making sure all is well and in working order. Fuel, sails, flares, anchor, life preservers etc.   No sailor will ever set to sea without taking on board a compass, charts and everything necessary for a successful voyage.

Mentally a sailor must prepare for the journey too, making a good plan and having contingencies in place. Whilst sailing the sailor and crew constantly trim the sails and rudder to stay on course. One cannot expect to set the sails and hope that the boat will somehow end up at its destination. Indeed the chances of that happening are very low to zero in fact.  Sometimes an unexpected squall appears from nowhere or the wind drops completely and one can almost end up going backwards especially if the current is strong, strong tidal currents can knock the boat of course as can sudden wind shifts, other shipping can get in the way which may mean avoidance tactics to keep safe and on course...

And so it is in life too. There are obvious parallels which can be drawn in the journey of life with sailing. Plan well, have a purpose in mind, keep focussed. Keep your dream or purpose in mind and enjoy the journey but be prepared for changes. The essentials are a good chart, a compass and an understanding of the territory and the weather. Sometimes a storm may blow you of course and obstacles may stand in your way but just as a good sailor knows what to do and adjusts for the course accordingly, even if that means making for a safe harbour for a while to take a rest and take on necessary provisions and wait out the storm so too do we need to develop these qualities of courage, strategic planning, focus, commitment, determination and tenacity to succeed with our own life goals. The interesting thing is even people who believe they do not have what it takes to develop these life skills can through leadership coaching learn and develop these skills along with  the confidence to integrate them into daily life.

Using NLP techniques and Hypnotherapy the subconscious mind can quickly integrate and learn these success skills which leads to a more positive confident knowledge base in life skills and a more confident and enriched personality a quality of life.

The premises at Counsellors together offers very easy access with only one small flight of stairs and is very private quiet and discreet. I am really looking forward to working with my clients from this new base. There is also a meeting room with media facilities which will open up the possibilities of training and group therapy sessions.

The Church of the Holy Spirit healing room is at ground floor level with only a slight gradient down into the building through the gate and this will be good for any of my clients who would find having to manage a flight of steps too difficult.

Quit smoking. How many sessions will I need?

Quit smoking. How many sessions will I need?

The most honest answer any therapist can give you is it all depends upon you upon your level of determination and personal commitment and taking responsibility for your outcomes. As therapists we provide you with the tools and we are facilitators to guide and direct you into hypnosis. As long as you listen regularly to the CDs and also exercise an element of willpower too then you stand a very high probability of successfully quitting smoking using hypnotherapy.

The value you put upon your health and the price you are prepared to pay to go to those lengths have everything to do with if you are successful or not however you quit. I've had people in the past tell me that they will only pay £100.00 to quit smoking and expect it to be in just one session and they have smoked heavily for years.  On the other hand I have had people who have done just that and quit in one session. They are almost though exclusively social smokers. I have had clients who have had four or five sessions and sometimes more and quit and they said they would have been prepared to take as long as it took them until they quit. That is personal commitment.

Generally for most light to medium smokers you should expect a consultation fact finding session and at least two to three sessions. Some people, particularly the long term hardened smokers may find they are more resistant to hypnotic suggestion and need more than two or three sessions. The essential thing for client and therapist to have an understanding of is uncovering my clients ‘WHY’ to pave the way for successful therapy. I usually find out at the outset what the persons WHY for smoking is, however, some people may not realise why they have a compulsive habitual need to smoke. They may smoke because of lack of self esteem and confidence or through high stress levels due to work/relationship problems. Some people smoke because they believe it makes them more attractive and some people smoke because it’s their way of being in control. All of these the smoker may not even be aware of as it is a deeply buries subconscious behavioural set which needs bringing to the surface.  These are issues which need to be identified and dealt with in their own right before the subconscious mind can accept the suggestions of being a non smoker. Without going down this path first one may only find partial success for a few months perhaps if at all, because this is what is known as a secondary gain and as such it has to be addressed at the outset.

The more hardened long term chronic smoker can realistically expect more sessions than two or three. I have had clients in my therapy chair who have been heavy smokers for years and who have needed six or more sessions which have turned out to be very successful. This may cost a few hundred pounds but if successful you’re not only saving money are you?

Hypnosis for business mindset development.

Are you in Business for yourself? Do you want to improve your sales and your teams sales figures?

If you answered yes then you need to read on

Hypnosis is the one completely natural self development tool with no artificial stimulus or unnatural additives which really works through harnessing the power you already have within you! The power and creativity of your own awesome mind!

Each of us were born to be as successful as we CHOOSE to be,we just need to decide whether or not to make that choice.Hypnosis is a natural state which we enter into every single day of our lives often without even realising it,when we read a book or watch tv or engage in something we do on autopilot, it is something we do quite naturally. However when we have the understanding and knowledge of the power and flexibility of just how to use hypnosis for our own self development in a precisely focussed way it is a guaranteed game changer that can take us to any level of success we determine for ourselves.
If everyone really understood the power of hypnosis and could accept the fact that it is a natural and personal state of mind that we can all access and not some spell that a wicked hypnotist puts you under or some gimmicky parlour trick, everyone would be using it voluntarily to help them create their own best success and happiness, whatever that means to each individual

Hypnosis is a private, personal self development tool that gives you a real creative edge, one with a scientific and medical proven track record and one that can change lives and minds.

Hypnosis can accelerate your learning ability.Improve your focus and motivation. Improve your confidence, determination and resilience, all natural resources we possess deep within already which are sometimes affected by setbacks and unforeseen consequences when things dont always go to plan.

How often do we start of with good intentions and high motivation and then something comes along to give us a big knock back? It might be something as simple as a lot of No's!

What hypnosis gives you the ability to do is to shine a highly concentrated natural focus upon those areas one wishes to develop at the subconscious level where all of our thoughts behaviours and actions are formed and bring those to the fore of your conscious mind so that they integrate naturally into your very way of being. Just ask anyone who has used hypnosis successfully for themselves and they will know what this statement means

If you are in business hypnosis is a self development tool that you should be taking very seriously as it gives you the power to access your own best inner resources and create your future with laser like mind set focus and precision.

If you know you are lacking in these areas they are skills and abilities that are already there but are either laying dormant or your internal self belief system and internal dialogue are working against you creating limiting beliefs and behaviours and sabotaging your own conscious efforts.

Hypnosis works and I have helped many people find that edge to develop the mindset they need to succeed. Why not join those people who have discovered the life changing power of hypnosis?

Hypnosis is for everyone but particularly apt for people who are in network marketing who understand about mindset and the importance of mindset and who need to find good reliable business tools to invest in. What is Emotional Freedom Therapy and how can it help you?

New blog added 12th Nov 2014

What is  EFT and Tapping?

EFT,Emotional Freedom Therapy is a very powerful self help therapy tool that can work for a lot of people with a very wide range of applications. It is very quick and easy to learn and quick and easy to apply.

Very recently I fell victim to what I thought was food poisoning, however from my chats with friends and other people it may well have been a very nasty gastric bug that seems to be doing the rounds. This bug seems to leave one feeling very tired and washed out and the last few days have been no exception with trying to catch up with the backlog of work.

Last night I wondered if EFT might help me to sleep better and to awaken feeling refreshed and so I set up a routine before going to sleep and this morning I do feel so much better than I did yesterday. EFT works with the bodies energy meridians and removes trapped energy freeing up the flow of energy within the body.
I have used EFT for a very wide range of situations with clients from pain management through to treating fears and phobias.

As far as my work as a therapist is concerned EFT is another very useful tool in my therapy box just like BWRT, NLP and Hypnosis. As a therapist I believe it is useful to have several tools in ones therapy box as sometimes we need to offer our clients several keys until they find the right one that unlocks the doors in their mind and helps them to connect with their inner resources.

EFT was discovered and developed by Gary Craig in the early 1990's.

EFT body tapping points

Tapping is a technique which uses gentle tapping on specific acupuncture points to release negative emotional states, thereby helping with almost all of our life problems, including, interestingly, our physical issues. Stage hypnotist and presenter Paul McKenna has been quick to take up Tapping. One very significant aspect of tapping that sets it aside from many other treatments, especially emotionally-oriented ones, is that you can often experience shifts within minutes. It is not uncommon for practitioners to witness major traumas being released and cleared permanently within one to three sessions. This possibility can push our belief boundaries. Tapping works surprisingly well for most people, most of the time, and when used appropriately its effects are usually found to be permanent. It is in use by around 250,000 people around the world today and can be used by everyone, including children.

There are two regulated professional therapies that use Tapping. The first is called thought field therapy (TFT) and was the first treatment system to make use of the tapping points to treat psychological issues. The second is Emotional Freedom techniques (EFT). This is greatly simplified to the point where it can be used even by children, and many practitioners would say it is equally as powerful as hypnotherapy for some situations

The following is a list of issues which EFT is known to be very helpful in assisting clients to resolve.

  • Abundance blocks
  • Addictions
  • Anger & rage
  • Anxiety
  • Blocks to achieving goals
  • Dissolving Sabotages
  • Emotional (Love) pain
  • Fears
  • Grief
  • Guilt
  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Improving sports performance
  • Panic Attacks
  • Past hurts
  • Physical pain
  • Physical issues
  • Phobias
  • Public speaking fears
  • Spiritual growth
  • Stress
  • Trauma – including PTSD
  • Weight management.

Scientists Demonstrate Remarkable Evidence Of Dream Telepathy Between People

Fascinating article by  as published in http://www.collective-evolution.com/

Dream telepathy suggests that human beings have the ability to communicate telepathically with another person while they are dreaming. This isn't a new concept, scientific interest in telepathy dates back to the fathers of the psychoanalytic movement. Freud, for example, considered telepathy and the implications of it with regards to psychoanalytic thought. He also considered dream telepathy, or the telepathic influence of thought on dreaming on multiple occasions. Carl Jung believed in the telepathic hypothesis without question, and even developed a theoretical system to explain “paranormal” events of this nature.

All great minds seem to encourage the study of various types of non-physical phenomena:- Read more

Changing your mind can change your life, but what happens when we make space for that change. What can you expect?

The tale of the new pair of shoes or what happens when we make space for change in our lives

A mother took her young son out to buy him a new pair of shoes to replace his old comfortable worn out pair.

Once upon a time his old worn out shoes were lovely but now they were just getting so worn and falling apart and could no longer be repaired and so it was time to change.

He was taken to the shops and for the very first time was allowed to choose his very own new shoes! He was so excited!
He tried them on for size, walking up and down the shop and despite the fact that they were new, stiff and uncomfortable and hadn't yet worn in and become supple, moulding to his feet, his excitement at having a new pair of shoes, the desire for change, of having something better was stronger than all those other little niggles put together....

Well at first it was but when he has to wear those new shoes everyday he finds all those little niggles that funnily enough he didn't once notice at the time of choosing them because he was thinking about those new shoes in a different way.
That's right, he just didn't notice because they were what he wanted and he was focussing on the moment of now, the thrill and excitement and that they were shiny and new and how grown up he felt being allowed to choose for himself.

As he wore those new shoes daily though, he noticed how uncomfortable they felt even though he hadn't noticed that at first and the more he dwelt upon the discomfort the more uncomfortable he felt. In fact it made it so difficult to think about anything else and school work started to suffer because all he could think about was how uncomfortable his shoes were and how his feet hurt....

He even started to think about how much he missed his old shoes and how much better they were even though they were old and worn out. He was feeling resentful about the change. Yes,these new shoes were so much more uncomfortable and they were ruining his daily life as he had to go everywhere in them.

You see,the old ones were so worn out and they were now in the bin and his mum just didn't have enough money to buy more than just the one pair. So the little boy cried and moaned all the time about how bad these new shoes were. The little boys mother understandably vexed at her sons apparent ingratitude asked him to tell her just why he was making such a big fuss over what seemed such a small thing.
As grown ups we have such a lot on our minds to deal with that sometimes we forget what it was once like to be small where the little things seem so big. To his young mind without so many things in it, it was a big deal. He complained how he hated these new shoes, how they hurt his feet all the time and how that made it difficult to do anything much because his feet were so sore and the shoes so uncomfortable, that the old ones were better and why did you have to make me have a new pair of shoes mum?

His mum, patient, loving and wise, listened and gently reminded him of how he loved the shoes when he first tried them on and how he didn't even notice anything. The little boy stopped and thought about this and said yes mum your right but why do they feel so uncomfortable now? His mum patiently explained why he didn't notice because of all of the excitement of choosing the new shoes and feeling grown up. She then went on to explain that everything was new and that the shoes were still stiff and hadn't moulded and adapted and softened to the boys feet and walking style and that within a little while as he got used to wearing them that he would soon not even think about them as they blended in with everything in his everyday life.
Understanding this and accepting the words of motherly wisdom imparted to him the little boy said sorry to his mum for making all that big fuss and told her how grateful he was for his new shoes and very soon as his mum had said those shoes became a little more comfortable everyday.....

Life is a bit like that too, sometimes we desire change because something isn't the way we want it to be in our lives and we make that change. As the impact of that change is integrated into our life things tend to change as we think, behave and react differently to how we once did before. New challenges sometimes come to the surface which demand our attention and challenge our views on life and how we deal with it.

These challenges can come from anywhere but perhaps typically they may come from our relationships with the people around us in our daily lives as they notice how we are different. Sometimes if some people do not find how we are different, easy for them, that may give rise to a new dynamic in your relationships which may create some change. Some of that change may leave you feeling good and some of the changes may mean the breaking down of old ways of relating and perhaps even in time a parting of ways. Sometimes when things are not working, it is more damaging to keep the status quo and just as a boil needs to lanced for the infection to clear the body so change is the only way forward for a person to grow to reach their full potential.

Sometimes when change is made and challenges come at us that we are not quite ready for we can become resentful of those changes and look to the past but looking to the past doesn't often serve our best interests particularly if in breaking free of old limiting behaviours and thinking and perhaps too breaking away from damaging relationships, business or personal, we have experienced positive change and growth. What we need is the patience and understanding to integrate those new changes into our lives and realise that like a chrysalis we are transforming. In fact in hypnotherapy the chrysalis is symbolic of transformation and growth. Just like the new pair of shoes our changes will soon become part of the normal pattern of our lives. The control we have in understand ing the power of hypnosis to make paradigm shifts of change and growth in our lives can take us to wherever we want to go in life. All we need is to work at the things we want and become focussed and patient.

Anorexia, Bulimia, Addictions and Laxatives in the news today.

New blog added 16 th oct 2014

Some very disturbing news on BBC's breakfast TV news this morning to hear how a watchdog investigation has uncovered evidence that increasing numbers of teenagers are turning to taking laxatives to lose weight. It is reported that some are taking dozens a day and seriously risking damaging their health.

The charity 'Beat' the eating disorders charity have been monitoring numbers and reports that 80%of people with anorexia or bulimia have been taking them and many of them are children. According to beat the eating disorders charity there are real and dangerous serious risks to the overuse of laxatives

As there are different types of laxatives and they work in different ways the ways that they can impact the body vary.

Laxatives abuse can give rise to organ failure, kidney and liver damage, blockages in the intestines which means a defunct colon causing long term health problems. Laxatives abuse can even cause heart failure.

This is an increasing and worrying trend fuelled by the many pro anorexia internet sites that offer dangerous tips about how to lose weight rapidly.

From a former laxatives addict Lottie who appeared on the show this morning Lottie talks about the ease of buying so many tablets from the age of twelve without being questioned and also about the addictive nature of the rush of the effects of being trapped in that cycle of addiction of wanting to keep using them and also all the horrible side effects such as feeling miserable, anxious and irritable with painful stomach cramps.

Lottie goes on to say how she now still has a sluggish bowel and gets stomach aches and feels that the addiction has really damaged her.

As a parent with a teenage child the fact that there sites exist really worry me. I believe these sites are really dangerous and I think some form of urgent action  needs to be taken to have them blocked or closed down.

Clearly there is a very big problem with a threefold increase in recent years of calls to the charities help line.

Parents, if you notice that your child is suddenly losing weight rapidly and showing any or some of the signs outlined above, sit them down and have a  talk with them and find out what is happening as there may well be a problem your child is trying to cope with and of course hiding from you.

You may notice changes in the behaviour and routines , for example are they going to the loo much more frequently?  Perhaps something in a busy schedule which may not be noticed.

As this post deals with weight issues, many young teenagers these days are overweight and falling into the category of obesity and it is clear why there is this problem. If your child has a weight problem and a self image problem it is very important to recognise this and to talk to them and take the right action. Getting teenage youngsters to get out and take regular exercise these days is difficult at the best of times because of the culture of computers and the fact that as a society we have encouraged our kids to stay indoors and stay safe.

If your teenage child has a self image problem, it is probably even more difficult for them to want to be seen out and about as they no doubt want to shut themselves away from being seen, particularly if there is any concerns about physical or psychological bullying or abuse. They will also perhaps be feeling disempowered and unmotivated and may well find it difficult to like or love themselves. The lonesome overweight teenage child will most likely find comfort in eating and so causes a cycle of problems that they feel unable to control.

From a therapy point of view we know that the help we provide can help people change their minds and change their lives in a positive way. Hypnotherapy can help with beating addictions and more importantly can also help people develop a new mindset to help naturally manage their weight through re-framing beliefs and attitudes and behaviours around diet and exercise in a much safer and more positive way
